Imbolc, or
Candlemas, marks the recovery of the Goddess after her pregnancy, as
well as the growing God. As he grows bigger and stronger, and as
the Goddess is revived, the days grow longer, and the world rouses from
its winter sleep. As the Goddess makes her transition from Mother
to Maiden, seeds begin to germinate, and the earliest bulbs, such as the
snowdrop and crocus, start to send out shoots. It is a time of
purification after the shut-in life of winter. Fire is the main
symbol of this Sabbat, in any form. This day has also been known
as Groundhog Day, the Feast of Torches, Feast of Pan, and Brigid's Day.
