The Book of Shadows - The Sabbats - Yule

Yule, often correlated with Christmas (because it's easier on those of us with Christian families and small children), is when we welcome the return of the Sun.  After spending time in the land of the dead, the God is born anew of the Goddess after her pregnancy, which began at Beltane (Ostara for some), and the days begin to lengthen.  With his return, as the Goddess recovers and makes her transition from the Samhain Crone to Mother, life slowly begins to stir deep underground.
Also at this time, the myth of the Oak King and the Holly King comes into play.  Having reigned for 6 months, the Holly King battles with the Oak King, and the Oak King wins, and reigns for 6 months.

Traditions

  • Create a Yule tree, either from a potted tree (that will be planted in Spring) or a cut one.  The choice is yours.
  • Make Pagan-themed decorations, either for the tree or for your home.  Craft them in the shapes of pentacles, the sun, or simply a round with the image of an eight-rayed disc.
  • Burn a Yule log, as the fire is symbolic of the God's rebirth.  Sometimes, the Yule log is a piece of wood cut from the Yule tree, but some insist that it should be Ash or Oak.  Have each family member make a wish on it beforehand.
  • Hang an orange pomander in your home as a symbol of the Sun.
  • Watch the Sun rise on Yule morning, as a way of welcoming the God back to the world of the living.
  • Celebrate the birth of the God with a feast, especially one featuring traditional foods.
  • Hang mistletoe as a symbol of fertility
  • Exchange gifts as a symbol of refreshment, of doing away with the old and replacing it with the new.  Clothes are excellent for this purpose (socks and underwear are not).
  • Find something new that you would like to study, and make an oath to yourself to learn about it in the year to come.
